Ovulation prediction kits are used to help a woman know when she is most likely to ovulate. This is helpful in timing sexual intercourse for becoming pregnant. It may be useful for couples who are having problems conceiving or are concerned about the timing of a pregnancy. A medical doctor may also recommend the use of this type of kit for timing artificial insemination or for fertility problems. These tests are not intended for contraceptive (birth control) use.

Ovulation is the release of an egg from the ovary. It normally occurs once a month in about the middle of the menstrual cycle. The egg can be fertilized only for about 48 hours (24 hours is best), so this is the only time during the menstrual cycle that a woman can become pregnant. Ovulation is controlled by luteinizing hormone (LH). The amount of LH present in the blood and urine is very small during most of the menstrual cycle but rises suddenly for a short time near the middle of the menstrual cycle. This sharp rise, the LH surge, usually causes ovulation within about 30 hours. A woman is most likely to become pregnant if she has sexual intercourse within the first 24 hours after detecting the LH surge.

Ovulation prediction test kits test for this large amount of LH in the urine. A change in color of the test pad or liquid will occur if enough LH is in the urine. Correctly using an ovulation prediction test kit is more accurate for predicting ovulation than measuring daily basal body temperature.

This rapid cassette test is intended for the (3-5 min.) qualitative determination of luteinizing hormone (LH) in human urine, as an indication of the time of ovulation surge. Results appear in 3-5 minutes. The kit contains 5 tests.
